I was litening to live recording of Ring of Fire recorded somewhere during the WLWHWT tour. In the breakdown Mike thanks the "Kelly Family for makin so god damn angry that I can write songs." I was just wondering if anyone knows what this is in relation to?

I've always wondered that too...
He says it on the Rockpalast German TV boot and possibly on Unchained.

The "Kelly Family" is a band that was really huge in Germany. They really had this hippy look goin on and played pretty cheesy music. You know like the kind of bands that little cirls cry to....as i said they were huge in Germany....point is that I think they played this "Rockpalast" thing as well (maybe right before social d) and it seems like Mike caught a few tunes and let people know what he thinks about it when they (social d) hit the stage....

members of the kelly family (they were literally a family (7 or 9 brothers and sisters, their father used to manage them later) that started playing irish folk music in pedestrian zones in the 70s and somehow made it to the charts in the late 80s and 90s) are actually living in california since the mid 90s. i think this quotation from a show in germany in 1997 is similar to what was written on chuck biscuits bass-drum back in those days: "bring me the head of Evan Dando", a statement against hippy crap. probably mike ness even somehow came in contact with germany's shame in california. who knows...

Rockpalast didn't ever show the Kelly family, dude. Rockpalast means Rock-Palace, is the kelly family rock(in') music?
Here is the list of Bands who played on 3/30/1997:
H-BLOCKX
THE OFFSPRING
SUEDE
THE LEMONHEADS
TOCOTRONIC
SOCIAL DISTORTION
REPUBLICA
WALTARI
CATHERINE
LABERINTO
...and the "we all hate the kelly family" is a german punkrock thing. The target group of the kelly family were fat and ugly 12-15 year old unwashed hippie chicks. Ask yourself why a lot of bands here rised their voice against them and their media present
